I read this after I read the first two Harry Potter books.  My wife got this for me.  A lot of our friends are opposed to Harry Potter (and other things such as Pokemon) because they are 'evil'.  I tend to think they are just good fiction.  I supposed it depends on how well grounded in your faith you are.

HARRY POTTER and his magical adventures as a wizard-in-training continue to mesmerize millions worldwide.  Related products such as trading cards, role-playing games, clothing and even furniture have flooded the market.

But several questions must be asked: Does Harry offer any moral lessons for today's children?  Is Harry's magick* truly fictional or is it based on actual occultism?  How do the Harry Potter tales compare with other fantasy books like those written by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien?

In this user-friendly and helpful volume, Richard Abanes answers these questions, provides a hard look at America's not-so-subtle drift toward paganism and examines the reasons why God says "no" to occultism.

Harry Potter and the Bible will help you make wise choices for your family.

*THE WORD MAGIC REFERS TO STAGE ILLUSIONS BY SLEIGHT-OF-HAND, WEREAS "MAGICK" REFERS TO OCCULT PRACTICES.

"Why has J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire become the fastest selling book in literature history?  Abanes not only provides the answer, but also equipes the reader to discern between helpful fantasy literature like The Chronicles of Narnia and harmful fascination with the Potter series."

HANK HANEGRAAFF, President
Christian Research Institute

"Richard Abanes' much-needed book provides a rare voice of sanity, reason and biblical discernment....  [He] meticulously inspects the Potter books and reveals their close connection to nearly every facet of the occult....  This is an important book for parents, grandparents, educators and pastors."

From the Foreward by DOUG GROOTHUIS, Associate Professor of Philosophy
Denver Seminary

RICHARD ABANES is the author/co-author of nearly a dozen books on cults, the occult and world religions.  He has also written for magazines and journals including CBA Marketplace, Christian Retailing, Christianity Today, Charisma, Christian Life, Ministries Today, Moody Magazine and Christian Research Journal.  Richard is the recipient of "The Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America" for "outstanding work on intollerance in North America," and the Evangelical Press Association's "Higher Goals in Christian Journalism Award" for an article on occults that appeared in Moody Magazine.  From 1997 to 2000, Richard served on the staff of Southern California's Saddlebach Church as a minister/teacher, worship leader and Director of Creative Arts.  He has also produced two full-length CDs of original contemporary music.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
